"Mid-West materials....has spent close to $2 million over the past three years getting its inventory systems and Net operations up to speed. Is the Internet Stronger Than Steel? Eryn Brown, Fortune Magazine, May 15, 2000

Joseph Koppelman
Founder and Chairman
A commodity supplier for a new business-to business website read the Fortune article, then called Mid-West and asked 'the company to participate in an on-line auction. Mid-West competed for the business of one of the largest truck trailer manufacturers, who was looking to purchase hot rolled steel. After completing the bid process, MidWest was informed that it had the winning bid! "A $1.5 million contract over six months is exciting for us," says Brian Robbins, Mid-West CEO. "That averages to almost two truckloads of steel each day from now until the end of the year."

News from Mid-West MaterialsThe Internet is definitely uncharted waters for the steel industry. Robbins' grandfather, Joseph Koppelman, built the company by completing deals in typical steel industry fashion: on the basis of personal encounters.
